Chinese Silks and Sewing Tools
Published and Written by Jocelyn Chatterton
Costume Society 2004.
"Chinese Silks and Sewing Tools" is a ravishing book, so beautifully illustrated and produced that it would be a welcome addition to anyone's shelves despite covering all the usual ground of rank badges, the five colours etc. The whole topic of sericulture and its history in China is clearly told, but it is for the delightful and informative chapters on domestic embroidery, the dainty tools used, and the dyes available that the book is of particular value. Jocelyn Chatterton, a specialist and dealer in antique oriental textiles, knows her subject thoroughly and presents it in a clear and charming way.
Costume Society of America - Fall 2002.
In Chinese Silks and Sewing Tools, Jocelyn Chatterton, an independent scholar and textile dealer, provides a breadth of information on a subject about which she is obviously passionate. ... All in all, this is a beautiful and practical guide for beginning collectors or anyone with an interest in the subject. For those new to the topic, the book provides a useful introduction, one that might possibly inspire further exploration.
Fabrications magazine - 2002
If you are even vaguely interested in China and its silk industry in any form, whether as a historian, embroiderer or a textile enthusiast then this book will appeal. Containing illustrations of early silks, domestic embroideries and sewing tools this is most definitely not a history book to be ploughed through but an enjoyable book that you can easily dip into with easy digestible amounts of information to make you want to read further. ...Jocelyn's own enthusiasm for antique oriental textiles obviously spills out from the pages and the book is a real pleasure to keep picking up and reading.
